Volunteer Role: Writer in Residence

Duration: 6 month post, possibility to extend to 12 months

Location: Remote (UK-based)
Commitment: One long-form piece of content per month

 

About the Role

Autistic Parents UK is looking for a passionate, articulate, and creative Autistic parent to join us as our Writer in Residence. This is a prestigious annual voluntary position designed to amplify the voices of Autistic parents while providing high-quality, relatable, and informative content for our growing community.

 

As the Writer in Residence, you will be the "lead voice" for our blog and resources for one year. Your work will form the backbone of our monthly communications, helping to reduce the original writing load for our core team while ensuring our community receives consistent, neurodiversity-affirming insights.

 

Key Commitments

• Monthly Long-Form Content: Produce one high-quality piece per month (approx. 800–1,000 words)

  • This could be a personal story, a "how-to" guide, a resource guide, or a statement on current issues affecting Autistic parents

• Digestible, Accessible Writing: 

  • Ensure content is accessible and written in plain english and not above a year 9 reading level

    • Plain English means clear, simple language that people can understand the very first time they read or hear it 

    • New terms should always be defined and explained

  • Write with a structure that allows our Communications Team to easily "slice" your work into 10+ social media posts, quotes, and newsletter snippets

• Adherence to Guidelines: Ensure all content follows the APUK Guest Blog Guidelines, including:

  • Using neurodiversity-affirming language (Identity-first language)

  • Providing descriptive titles and clear headings

  • Including Alt-text for any suggested images

  • Not supporting a specific political party

• Collaboration: Briefly meet (online) with the Comms Team quarterly to plan themes and topics, or more frequently if needed

  • Your posts will be reviewed and edited by the APUK team to ensure they fit with the organisational voice and guidelines. This will be a collaborative process.

 

What You Will Gain

• Exposure: Your work will be featured prominently across APUK’s website, monthly newsletters, and social media platforms, likely reaching hundreds of thousands of Autistic parents and professionals.

• Platform Growth: You will have a dedicated bio at the end of every post with links to your own blog, portfolio, or social media channels, helping you build your personal brand and following.

• Portfolio Building: You will end the year with a professional body of significant works published by a leading UK non-profit.

• Community Impact: Your insights will help reduce the isolation many Autistic parents feel and help to shift the narrative around neurodivergent parenting.

 

About You

• You are an Autistic parent (Self-identified or formally diagnosed).

• You have a flair for writing and a knack for explaining complex feelings or situations in an engaging, clear and accessible way.

• You understand the nuances of the Autistic community and are committed to neurodiversity-affirming principles.

• You are reliable and able to commit to one deadline per month.
